Internet Explorer 6 was released in 2001, and since then it's been redesigned from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. There are a number of web standards that EI 6 doesn't follow that prevents it from correctly displaying a large number of websites. Internet Explorer 7 and 8 are available and correct many of these shortcomings. Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 8?The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of seven years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 8 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks. Quoting Computer security researchers from ETH Zurich, Google, and IBM: "The issue of browser security matters more these days because more and more malware is targeting Web browser vulnerabilities. Remotely exploitable vulnerabilities have been on the rise since 2000 and accounted for 89.4% of vulnerabilities reported in 2007, according to the study, which claims that "growing percentage of these remotely exploitable vulnerabilities are associated with Web browsers." Among the various Web browsers studied - Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Safari 3, and Opera 9 - Firefox 2 is the most secure, according to the study. Firefox 2 is considered to be the most secure Web browser because 83.3% of its users worldwide are running the most current version. Second, third, and fourth places go to Apple Safari 3 (65.3% of users running the most current version), Opera 9 (56.1%), and Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (47.6%)." Why do people still use IE6?Some people get used to a browser and find it hard to upgrade and re-adjust to something new. Another situation can occur where an organization has developed custom applications that run only on IE6. Shouldn't developers produce their websites to reach most of the internet users? This is true, and IE6 is still used by 17% of the market. But as well, web designers have a duty to create and release their work in the most advanced and secure conditions. |
